Leader of Opposition, National Assembly
Omar Ayub Khan is an experienced politician in Pakistan from Haripur, having served in several governments. He is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. He is a frontline face in Imran Khan’s fight for justice in Pakistan. Omar Ayub is the son of Gohar Ayub Khan, a seasoned politician, businessman and army officer. He has played a key role in Imran Khan’s struggle for rule of law since 2022, as he organized the 2022 Azadi March for freedom and justice in Pakistan and also served as Secretary-General for the party until his resignation. He has been consecutively been serving as a member of the National Assembly since 2002. He is a prominent economist and studied finances and economics from Aitchison College and the George Washington University.
Political Career
Before joining PTI, Omar Ayub was part of PML-N from 1993 to 2001, before becoming a member of PML-Q from 2001 to 2009 and becoming Minister of State for Finance in the PML-Q government. Omar Ayub has a significant political career as he has served in many government ministries. Omar Ayub served under two other parties before joining the PTI, the People’s Muslim League from 2009 to 2012 and PML-N again from 2012 to 2018.
Role in the PTI
Omar Ayub Khan joined the PTI in 2018 and has supported the party since then. He supported the formation of Imran Khan’s government and was appointed as the Federal Minister for Petroleum, Power, and Economic Affairs under Imran Khan’s government. As the minister for Economic Affairs he advocated for Pakistan’s economic recovery alongside Imran Khan. He also supported Imran Khan’s energy, power and economic reforms. As an MNA, he supported the PTI in parliament and played a key role in Imran Khan’s government.
Since 2022, he has taken a high leadership role in the PTI and has helped Imran Khan in his fight against injustice, especially in the late 2022 Azadi March against corruption and oppression. He was appointed as Secretary-General of the PTI and was chosen as the candidate for Prime Minister on behalf of Imran Khan in the 2024 Elections, although the results were maligned and rigged.
He was nominated as the 12th Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly by PTI parliamentarians. He was elected as Leader of the Opposition on April 2nd, 2024 and has voiced concerns against corruption and rigging as opposition leader since then. He has held press conferences, delivered powerful speeches in the National Assembly and has fought for justice in Pakistan according to the vision of Imran Khan and PTI.
