Azam Swati is a senior PTI member and a prominent senator from Khyber Pakhtunkwa. He has been an active core member of the PTI since 2011 and served as the Minister for Narcotics Control and Minister for Railways in Imran Khan’s government. He is notable for his bravery as he underwent immense torture in 2022, in an attempt to make him leave PTI and Imran Khan, though Swati has remained strong.
Swati was born in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and belongs to the Jalangial Alisheri family in the Swati tribe. He is the great grandson of Jageerdar Akbar Khan Swati, the Khan of Gidarpur village in Manshera who was a member of the cabinet of Queen Victoria during the British Colonial era. His maternal grandfather, Khan Sahib Haji Faqeera Khan Swati was the chief of Malakpur village located in Mansehra
Swati entered politics as a lawyer and began protesting against Zia-ul-Haq’s regime in the 1970s. He also migrated to the United States in the 1970s, where he started a convinience store and business career. His business career was rapidly succesful and he owned more than 100 stores, buildings and restaurants in Texas and Louisiana in the U.S.
After moving back to Pakistan in 2001, he became an active and prominent senator from 2003 to 2011 and again from 2018 till today. He joined PTI in 2011 and has been a widely active member since then. He aims to serve the country under the leadership of Imran Khan. He has done a great job on the ground and in the Senate of Pakistan to bring a positive change according to the ideology of PTI.
In 2022, he was abducted and heavily tortured with physical beating and was blackmailed severely in an attempt to get him to leave Imran Khan. Despite such immense pressure, torture and harm he went through, he has stood alongside Imran Khan in desperate times of political turmoil and crackdown on PTI. He is highly regarded for his remarkable bravery for standing with Imran Khan and PTI despite immense torture, and is working as a senator today.
